Mathematics Society
Dear Fuzzy Mathematicians:
We are pleased to invite you to join us in an effort to form a “New Mathematics Society” (NMS), a new academic group designed to serve its members and mathematicians throughout the world. We believe there is a compelling need to form such a society, as we outline in this letter along with our proposed organizational plans. We encourage your honest assessment and seek comments on how to effectively achieve our political goals. Remember: together, we can do it!
Motivations: It is our belief that the time is right to launch a New Mathematics Society. Fuzzy mathematics (FM) has evolved into a relatively mature state in which many branches of mainstream mathematics have been fuzzified! The same can be said about Rough Set Theory. Although FM’s future is bright, coming together as a group will help ensure a strong foothold with unshakable foundations. An organized society can provide the vehicle to move beyond that foundation and further the growth and interests of the FM community. We believe that mathematicians, like our colleagues in other academic disciplines, should be creative, imaginative, and innovative.
Plans: A charter meeting will be held July 23, 2012 during the 15th Joint Conference on Information Sciences (JCIS 2012) at the Salt Lake Marriott City Center, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. The JCIS conference is scheduled to run from July 21-26, 2012. Each potential NMS member attending this important meeting will be recognized as a charter or founding member and will have an opportunity to participate in the election of officers, including president, vice president, secretary and any others deemed necessary. We also plan to discuss potential issues in depth and determine a course of action for the society and its membership.
Your Participation: Your participation is of paramount importance to us. You will help determine the future of new mathematics in general and Fuzzy Mathematics in particular! Over the past four decades, such great mathematicians as Richard Bellman, Azriel Rosenfeld, Lotfi Zadeh, Zdzislaw Pawlak, and others have led the way for us! Now it is time for us all to join together for the well-being of our research community. And how appropriate to be meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah since 2012 is the quarter century anniversary of the NAFIP — at Logan, Utah!
We suggest that you bring two items to the meeting, a mathematical talk and a strategic idea for the scope of the society. This could include anything from producing a high quality journal to providing aid to educational programs or financial assistance to third world mathematicians, etc. Your thoughts, comments, constructive ideas, and suggestions are important to the success of this movement! We look forward to seeing you next summer, and in the meantime, please visit our web site at www.jcis.org.
Sincerely,
John Mordeson
